Double Cleansing Secret: How To Really Get Your Makeup Off!
Maybe you've heard of the double cleansing method. Certainly not new, estheticians always encourage clients to cleanse the skin twice to remove all makeup and dirt.
But today, the double cleansing method has taken a slightly different road. Instead of cleansing your skin twice with the same cleanser, the newer version touts cleaning your skin with two different cleansers.
If you're familiar with the Korean method of double cleansing, you know that you start with an oil for the first cleanse followed by a water-based cleanser.
Proponents of this method say that the skin feels incredibly soft, which is true. I tried the Korean cleansing method and my skin was extremely soft.
There was only one problem. It didn't get all my makeup off.
Why the Korean Cleansing Method is Flawed
The reason this cleansing method is less than effective is that the cleansing steps are backward. Here's why. In general, oils have large molecules and that makes them tougher to penetrate the skin, especially on a first cleansing pass.
However, if you start the cleanse with Rose Hips Oil, you should have better results because it has the smallest molecule of all of the oils.
For all other oils, those large molecules have to pass through all that dirt and makeup. That's difficult!
Following this cleanse with a water-based cleanser means water has to try to penetrate an oily surface. Again difficult, which is why the method isn't effective for cleansing the skin.
A Cleaner Double Cleansing Method
It makes way more sense to start the initial cleanse with a water-based cleanser. The molecules are smaller, penetrating the skin more effectively while removing dirt and makeup.
Then follow that cleanse with an oil-based cleanser. You're going to see quite a difference in the
amount of makeup and dirt you remove. Plus, your skin will be soft.
Additional makeup removed after Korean method and then my method. |
Take a look at the cleansing cloths on the right here. This is the additional amount of makeup I removed after using the Korean method followed by my method of using a water-based cleanser first, then an oil-based cleanser.
Impressive, huh?

Go with A Natural Makeup Base
As always, I encourage you to go with a natural makeup rather than conventional makeup.
Your skin has enough challenges with chemicals. There's no point in clogging up your pores with these unregulated ingredients.
Conventional makeup is also more difficult to remove, in my opinion. At least with a natural makeup, you're only concerned with removing natural ingredients, not man-made, could-seriously-harm-you chemicals.
Additionally, choose natural skincare. There are many excellent brands including those for sensitive skin. What's more, natural makeup and skincare are good for your skin!
Give your skin every chance to perform at its best by choosing simple, natural ingredients that your body recognizes and uses.
Then make sure you remove all traces at the end of the day!
