How Much Plastic Is In Your Makeup Foundation?

Yes, plastic.

Kind of revolting, isn't it? But it happens all the time.

Really, most makeup is polluted because the Food and Drug Administration has zip, zilch, zippo authority to require companies to test their cosmetics for safety.

Surprised?

The FDA is supposed to be the consumer's watchdog, and yet it only conducts pre-market reviews on certain cosmetic color additives and active ingredients for over-the-counter drugs.

Women like you and me who love makeup are left to fend for ourselves.

Government Myths About Cosmetic Oversights

You want to believe that the government, in this case, the FDA, is watching out for you, but it's simply a myth. It isn't.

Check your handbag. Pull out your lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, lip balm, and anything else you apply to your skin. Now take a deep breath because the government does not prohibit the use of dangerous chemicals in your personal care products.

But that's only half the problem.

Cosmetic companies can use any raw material or ingredient they want in their cosmetic products without government approval. (FDA 2005)

Compare that to our neighbors across the pond. The European Union banned more than 1,000 ingredients from use in cosmetics. But the FDA?

Here are the ingredients they have banned:

  • Bithionol
  • Chlorofluorocarbon propellants
  • Chloroform
  • Halogenated salicylanilides (di-, tri-, metabromsalan and tetrachlorosalicylanilide)
  • Methylene chloride
  • Vinyl chloride
  • Zirconium-containing complexes
  • Prohibited cattle materials (including material from non-ambulatory cattle, material from cattle not inspected and passed and mechanically separated beef).
That's it.

The Environmental Working Group has a post on their site, if you'd like to learn more.

The Cover Girl Claim Of "Clean, Fresh" Makeup

Environmental groups have been shaming Proctor & Gamble for years about their false advertising claims. But since the company isn't breaking any laws, it doesn't have to respond. (They also still do animal testing.)

Let me give you an example of the ingredients in Cover Girl's pressed powder.

Dimethicone, which is used in hair products to give shine, is also used as a makeup primer to smooth lines and pores. Dimethicone's job is to fill your pores with liquid silicone. So why does Cover Girl say that their products are non-comedogenic?

Dimethicone is one of the ingredients in their pressed powder!

Talc is another ingredient in their pressed powder. Although talc is mined from the earth, it naturally occurs with asbestos. So if talc isn't processed correctly, you're layering asbestos on your skin as well as talc.

Unless the label certifies that the talc is free of asbestos, it's best to avoid it.

These are just two of the 17 ingredients in Cover Girl's pressed powder. Sadly, 67% of these ingredients are harmful or potentially harmful to your skin and your health. To get a more in-depth look at CoverGirl's ingredients, click here.
